TRACK BY TRACK

The Greatest Time of Change was the first track we put out long before the actual record, and that's because we wanted to give everyone a clear sign this album is going to be something different from what we've done before. It's a massive song with a lot of stuff and obviously was a tough task to keep it together with the vocals too. I remember listening the instrumental demo for months before I was able to build up potential ideas what I'm actually going to do with the track. Randomly placing the spoken words at the beginning of the song also opened up the chorus and it turned out to become one of my personal favorite sections on the album. You can hear Lauri's voice on chorus too and I think we really form a nice co-op sound here. Lyric-wise I wanted to follow the epic route like the song itself, so it's kind of a more artistic, dark twisted poetry about the struggle of life as it may sometimes seem, in this constantly changing world we live in.

Valkyrie is a pretty simple, straight forward and melodic song, which we think has a catchy chorus. It's quite easily approachable, I guess, so that's why it was chosen to be the second video song of the album. This was one of the songs for our composer and guitarist Antti, where everything just fell in place easily and the final instrumental arrangement was complete in a very short frame of time. I don't think it comes as a surprise that Valkyrie is themed as kind of a melancholic love song, but more than addressing any specific relationship or individual experience, it's about love as an emotion in general. At least most of us know it, I think, and sometimes it can get pretty nasty inside our heads. Our drummer Jarkko came up with a list of cool song names for this album and Valkyrie was instantly the perfect pick to represent a relative figure for the lyrics. From there it also found it's way into the album cover.

After something quite massive and something more easily approachable we wanted to go fast. Mortal Paradigm is more of an action filled song and even if it doesn't have that much of a wide variety in it, I think it has a great atmospheric chorus and the instrument side is really flying throughout the whole song. This was originally one of the songs we were not so sure about, but it kind of came into life during the final periods just before entering the studio. After we received the first mixes it was obvious it works really well. This is also the only song that has lyrics from someone aside of me, as Jarkko wrote them for most of the song. It's about accepting your mortality, and appreciating the short period of time we are here. You can't cheat the death.

There Will Be Blood was among the first composed songs for this album and it was clear from the beginning it's going to end up in the live setlist too. It's clearly divided in two parts, has quite a big chorus with some piano, some rough triole riffs with maybe the most aggressive chapters of the album too. Lyrically it's a personal song for me. It's one of those not so beautiful realizations, I guess, when you are not interested or being able to make the change out of what you represent.

Where the Sinners Crawl has this very different kind of build-in and it really drops down nicely when it starts properly. We think the chorus turned out to become catchy too. It's been in the live setlist and already kind of become some sort of "anthem of madness" out of the new songs we've played. That's why we filmed it back in Jurassic Rock-festival in our home town and released the video of it. Basically it's for all the narrow minded people who refuse to let go of their views, opinions and believes, and refuse to open up their eyes for anything else than what they've got used to. They easily then see your actions as evil and are always the first ones to judge you. It's about kissing these kind of retards "one more last goodbye".

Oceans on Fire is a bit of a "hate song" that does not have any certain person as an object, it's kind of a reminder about the fact how privileged we are to witness the form of life in our humanity and how some people completely disrespect that. The track is built on pretty simple elements but after all, forms one of the most roughest songs on the record. We think it also has been solid on live set.

Bastard's Seed was one of the older songs that ended up on this record, and was actually modified quite a lot, even as late as during the recording sessions at the studio. This was the only song I had pre-written the lyrics before even diving into the arrangement side of things. We think it has pretty artistic feel in it and it's definitely one of the most obvious statements in our history when it comes to the lyrics. Life is a gift, not a given right. Quality, not the quantity.

Ethereal is more of a traditional melodeath-style song and was also the first track on the album I did the demo vocals. As it opened the game for the album that way, it surely has somehow shown the path for the whole record. Lyrics are pretty poetic mind-flow stuff around the fact that world is changing, and some have completely failed to stay on with it. I came across this line "we have learned to swim just by watching you drown" somewhere and instantly knew this has to end up in a song. I think it really sums up the story here.

Perdition. Fast, more punk, aggressive and short track. In contrary, it has a really big sounding middle-section where you can find massive keyboards and some really dark atmosphere. This one also has a really catchy lead-melody throughout the song, if you ask me, and Lauri also has a lot of vocals to double things up. Lyrically, it's a song from the perspective of humans who don't need religion in their lives and are able to find the strength to continue purely from themselves when going through darker times. It's about shaking hands with the darkness, and being able to move this new best friend out of the way when necessary. It actually has a really positive vibe for this album.

Memento Mori. This is the first track Antti composed for our second album. It has a lot going on and I think it has so many different atmospheres you can not even find elsewhere on the album. Memento Mori is most likely the best song on the album to describe where the band stands musically on this day. It was the first track where we started to try very different kind of approaches on many aspects. I had the chorus done with vocals, but struggled like crazy with the rest of the track for a long time. Then again, when things started to fall into place it all came together quickly. I think this song is the ultimate summary of the whole record, and basically every song just falls under it lyrically. It also has a very distinct view on euthanasia. It was an obvious record closing track from the early stages on.
